Makeup isn’t cheap. The best foundations, lipsticks and other essentials can cost upwards of $50, ad when you consider that you can go through several of these a year, those costs can mount-up.
But how much do women spend on makeup a year? There is a lot to consider, as the cosmetics market is sizable and the average woman will strive to own the best hair dryer, the best cosmetics, the best straighteners and much more.
As a result, the answer may just surprise you.
How Much do Women Spend on Looking After Themselves?
According to People Magazine women spend in excess of $15,000 on beauty products over the course of a year. Nearly $4,000 of this goes on mascara, while more than $1,500 goes on lipsticks.
This is just the average, of course. If you opt for budget-friendly cosmetics and you prefer to go sans-makeup as often as you can, then those costs will be reduced significantly, perhaps to just $3,000 or $4,000 a year. But even that is still lot of money and then you have to consider than many women will actually spend more than $15,000.
To put things into perspective, if you smoke one pack of cigarettes a day at current city prices, you would spend less than $4,000 over the course of a year. In other words, to spend as much on a smoking habit as the average woman spends on makeup you would need to smoke three packs a day, and even then you would still have plenty of change leftover.
If you prefer drinking, then you could afford to consume a crate of beer or 20 ounces of liquor a day for a year and still not reach that spending.
It is an astonishing amount of money, one that could be used to pay rent, to go on several vacations, or to buy yourself a brand new Macbook every single month.
But that’s the society we live in. We place a high value on looking good and it is a price that many women feel that they need to spend.
What About Men?
Historically, men have not been ones for cosmetics and skincare, but that is changing, and rightly so. These days men are spending more money than ever on skin creams, beard oils, and hair products. There are also many cosmetics out there that have been designed for men and these are selling bigger than ever.
At a few hundred to $1,000 a year, the average that a man spends on cosmetics and skincare is nowhere near as much as a woman, but it’s a number that is growing all of the time, which is great news for women who like their men a little more well-groomed, and even better news for the beauty industry who is profiting from those purchases.
